What is CoLang 2018?
CoLang offers an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students, practicing linguists, and indigenous community members to develop and refine skills and approaches to language documentation and revitalization. The Institute is designed to provide an opportunity for a diverse range of participants to become trained in a wide range of skills in community-centered language documentation.

CoLang 2018 will be held from June 18 to July 20, 2018 at the University of Florida. There are two registration options:
- Two-week Workshops (June 18-29) – Two weeks of intensive workshops on practices, principals and models of language documentation and revitalization. Please visit our workshops page or download the CoLang 2018 schedule for more information on the workshop courses that will be offered at CoLang 2018.
- Five-week Workshops (June 18-July 20) – The Two-week Workshops followed by a three-week practicum (field methods) course, working with speakers of select indigenous languages applying hands-on techniques in language documentation. Please visit our practica page for more information on the languages that will be studied at CoLang 2018.
Participants may choose to enroll only in the two-week workshops however, both parts are integrated, as students who enroll in the field training are required to enroll in the preceding two week workshops, thereby receiving an intensive course in documentary best practices before putting these skills to use.
Can I change the workshop that I am enrolled in?
As long as the workshop that you would like to attend is not full, you may change workshops, so long as you have the permission of the instructor. Please ask the instructor(s) of your preferred workshop for permission.
Also please remember that some workshops have a prerequisite (e.g. you cannot take FLEx 2 unless you have taken FLEx 1).

Where are the CoLang Workshops located on campus?
The CoLang workshops take place in three buildings on the UF Campus — Turlington, Dauer, and Pugh Halls.

What is included in my Registration Fee?
The CoLang registration fee for both the 2 week and 5 week workshop includes all workshop materials (folder, note pad, pen, campus map, local visitor information, schedule, etc.), dining cards, access to all social events (plenary lectures, movie nights, opening and closing night reception, St. Augustine Day trip, and Paramount Dinner Downtown), and housing accommodations/parking pass if requested in advance. There will be limited parking passes available for those who did not request a parking pass in advance. Depending on the registration type (2 week or 5 week) you will have a dining card in the back of your name badge that can be used to purchase meals on campus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 5 days per week (3 meals per day for 5 days per week). The amount of the dining card per meal can be used at any dining location on campus that sells food and beverage and the full meal amount will be covered for meals at any dining hall on campus (Gator Corner Dining or Fresh Food Company). For more information on dining locations and hours, please visit the Gator 1 Central website. Please note that if you lose your dining card, this will not be replaced.
What do I need to bring with me to CoLang?
June in Gainesville typically has highs in the low 90’s (degrees Fahrenheit) and lows in the uppers 60’s (degrees Farenheit) with afternoon showers. We encourage all students and instructors to bring an umbrella or rain jacket with them for when it rains. We also encourage students and instructors to bring a sweater or light jacket to wear in the workshop classrooms and for other event venues, as the rooms can get chilly. The weather is often hot and humid, so for time spent outside, it is encouraged to have sunscreen to wear when walking around campus or exercising outside. As stated in the dorm information tab, there will be laundry facilities at both Mallory and Cypress hall to use during CoLang, so laundry can be done on campus for those who wish to wash clothes. Laundry detergent can also be purchased at any of the on campus convenience stores if you do not wish to pack detergent. The general dress code for CoLang will be casual, as walking around campus is better with comfortable clothing. For the movie nights and social events, you are welcome to dress business casual, as these will be nicer events but there is no strict dress code required.
What is the Dorm Address and Important information on Housing?
Student Dorms will be located at Mallory Hall (1367 Inner Rd, Gainesville, FL 32611) and Instructor Dorms will be located at Cypress Hall (1310 Museum Rd, Gainesville, FL 32612). For the dorm room, you will be given a key and a wi-fi log in from the housing staff when you arrive to the dorm. Each student and instructor will be provided with linens, a pillow, and towels for showering, but if you have a preference with pillows, we recommend you bring your own pillow. There are laundry facilities on the ground floor of Mallory Hall and laundry facilities on the 2nd floor of Cypress Hall for those who wish to do laundry. Please watch the video on the bottom page of the housing website for more information on costs, payment methods, and how to do laundry on campus. Laundry detergent can be purchased at any of the convenience stores on campus if you do not wish to pack some with you.
The following check-in and check-out windows have been assigned for the dorms. UF Conference Department Staff will be at the Cypress Desk to provide check-in materials (name badge, dining card, workshop materials, campus maps, Visit Gainesville materials, and parking passes for those who requested a pass in advance) and to help assist with questions during the main check-in windows on both 6/16 and 6/17. Check-in for ALL GUESTS will take place inside Cypress Hall. This is actually where the area desk is for the entire Cypress, Yulee, Reid and Mallory area. Here is the exact address for Cypress Hall (1310 Museum Rd, Gainesville, FL 32612). You can find the link on the campus map here. To see it spatially, after the Mallory guests check-in, they can either go up and around Reid Hall, or go out and around Yule.
If you arrive outside these check-in windows, please contact the on call-number at the area desk and a housing staff member will meet you to make sure you get checked-in. Your parking pass will also be with a housing staff member if you check-in to the dorm outside of the first weekend. For those who will be checking-in and out of days and times outside of the assigned windows, a housing staff member can be reached at the Yulee Area Desk (at Cypress Hall) to assist you:

If you arrive outside of the normal housing desk hours, you will need to call the 24 hour desk – Infinity. That number is: 352-392-9675. This number is posted on the lobby entrance doors to Cypress, so it is easily visible. Housing requests that guests either call when they actually arrive, or if you feel more comfortable calling no more than 5-10 minutes prior to your arrival time at Cypress. Their staff lives in the same building, so it typically only takes a few minutes for them to come down. When you call, please just inform the desk that you need to Check-In to Cypress Hall, and need assistance from Conference Services. They will then inform the housing staff and they will be down within a few minutes!
If there are any issues or questions while on site, please go to the Area Desk for assistance. The area Desk operating hours are listed below. If after hours support is needed, the emergency on-call number will be hanging on the Area Desk doors. Participants should call this number and provide a detailed description of the issue. Staff will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How do I get from the airport to the University of Florida?
The Gainesville airport is only four miles from the University of Florida and will take around 10 minutes to get from the airport to the dorms on campus. The easiest way to get to our campus is with a taxi or Uber, which will cost around $20. There is also a bus (#25) that can be taken from the airport to campus, but be sure to check the time table to make sure it is running when you arrive, as the bus only runs every hour and makes several stops along the way. There will be no transportation provided for students and instructors flying in and out of Gainesville Regional Airport, so please make sure to arrange your own transportation. We encourage taxi/uber ride sharing, since there are only a limited number of flights that come into the Gainesville airport every day and this will help cut down on the cost of the trip. If you wish to schedule rides in advance, please contact Murphy’s Taxi directly.

Can I workout on Campus?
There are several running and walking paths on campus that can be used for exercise and located on a campus map that you will be provided upon check-in. The Ben Hill Griffin football stadium is also open during the day to the public to use for exercise. For those who do not wish to exercise outside, guest passes to the fitness centers (Southwest Recreation Center or Student Recreation Center) can be purchased each day for $9.39.
